Ready Set Design

This is the website for Landmark Cinemas. My first thought when I see this homepage, as I have multiple times, is that there’s too much content displayed for just one page. This makes for too many design elements, and a sense of being overwhelmed in trying to find what you’re looking for, even if everything is listed on this one page. It could probably benefit from a sidebar to neatly organize most of the functions, to be opened and closed by the user and keep the page more refined. Its inclusion of so much information on one page could have to do with Kissane’s observation that specialists in aspects of web design have been dropping the use of pages on websites in favour of treating the website as a database to hold chunks of textual information that can be moved around and put into ‘containers’; they may get more engagement by housing all information on one page rather than creating more pages. The colour contrast of background and text that Charlie Zha discussed is adequate here with the yellow text on black background, though I think the text could be made thinner and bigger to be more visible. The purple from the ads, however, clashes with this colour scheme, as do the many colours from the pictures. I think the page could be reorganized and adjusted to be structurally more refined, and visually more cohesive. Cineplex’s website by contrast is much more consistent with its aesthetic and presentation of ‘chunks’ of information, while still housing a lot on one homepage. Thankfully, Landmark includes an accessibility feature.
